Assignment . . .

1.) What are the factors that contributed to the success and failure of Steve Jobs as a technopreneur?

Steve Jobs is just like us, humans. And as humans we face different challenges in our individual lives. Challenges that will make us a successful or unsuccessful, or ether a winner or loser. Some of us view success in what we have like power, wealth, or fame. This isn’t the true success, some of the most enduring and satisfying forms of success have nothing do with acquiring power, wealth, or fame. Success is what you make it. Failure is also a part of our life. This isn’t easy to accept especially to those people who are competitive but we have to face it bravely. As humans it is our capacity which makes us able to bear the high tide and low tide in our life. But as I live in this world I have learned that “a winner never quit” and I myself is a witness to the different person who never quit and now is a successful person. As I’ve watched the movie "PIRATES OF THE SILCON VALLEY” twice so that I will truly understand the different scene in the movie. And as I have finished the movie I realized that success and failure will always be a partner.

Factors that contributed to the success of Steve Jobs:

Great Interpersonal Skills:
“Interpersonal skills are the skills that a person uses to interact with other people. Interpersonal skills are sometimes also referred to as people skills or communication skills. Interpersonal skills involve using skills such as active listening and tone of voice, they include delegation and leadership.”
- Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interpersonal_skills

Steve Jobs as I saw in the movie, he has this skills and I think this skills is a gift or it’s inborn, not all people have this skills and Steve Jobs uses his skills and develop it more. He is also a great leader to his company, and as a leader he led and inspires his employee to their best for the better of the APPLE Computers. Steve Jobs even before he became billionaire, as what Steve Wozniak said in the movie “I was never any good in talking in those days, but STEVE? He was AMAZING. . . “And as a technopreneur, he/she must have this kind of skills.

[b]HARD WORKING
Many of us didn’t want to be in a position that does hard things; sometimes we want the easy one to be ours. Some of us thinks “why would I put myself in that position if he can do that” or ”Why would I pick the hard one if they want me to do the easy one” . If we set our mind in this way, we cannot get to the goal we want in our lives. I believe that doing things which are challenging will discover your full potential and gain more ideas and capabilities to do much better the last time you do it. Like what Steve and Wozniak did by creating a machine which is computers and work hard to build much better machine.
“You’ll never succeed in idealizing hard work. Before you can dig mother earth you’ve got to take off your jacket. The harder a man works, at brute labor, the thinner his idealism, the darker his mind.”
D. H. Lawrence.

OPTIMISTIC
Thinking positively in the things or situations even it is critical is one of the attitude that must have by a technoprenuer or a businessman. Steve is optimistic that Apple computers will not be common machine, but a machine that will change or affect the life of people in the world.
Innovations:
I think Jobs is also having a creative mind. By the demand for innovation Steve is always doing the best he can with his team to search more, analyze more, and create new products that will be the next big thing in APPLE

Factors that contributed to the failure of Steve Jobs:
ATTITUDE:
As what I’ve saw in the movie Steve has these moody attitude or shall we say attitude disorder. When the time APPLE has boom and already known in the world, Steve also have changes in his attitudes toward his employee. He became unpredictable and screwed his employee in some scene in the movie. He is also forced his employee more than 8 hours and his dealing with his employee like his servants or slave.
Perfectionist:
As Steve dream to wipe out IBM, he work hard with Wozniak and when the time Apple grow Steve that time has this attitude disorder, and as his career is booming he wants to see things perfectly in his company. Like in a scene in the movie when they interview an applicant, he questioned the guy in a way that it is so personal to the side of the applicant. To be a perfectionist is good but as what they’ve said “everything that is too much is bad”, and I’m so agree with that.
When he don’t know what he truly wants:
By the time Steve Jobs launched the Macintosh, the company divided into two (2), I don’t know what’s going to his mind that time why he created Macintosh while Apple is still in the company. And when they have party in the beach and when they drink with the President of Apple that time John Sculley, they ask him why he did not give money to his daughter even though he can, he said “I don’t know”, It came to my mind that he really don’t know what he what’s in that time.

Carelessness:
Steve in that time let Bill Gates work in APPLE, and Bill almost know all the stuff in the APPLE and silently building his own Operating System named “WINDOWS”. His careless in the sense he didn’t get the sympathy of his people. And he doesn’t know what his employee feels at him or the board members look at him and because of his actions and performance John Sculley fired Mr. Steve Jobs.

2.) How do you see yourself as a technopreneur?

First thing first, when I first saw the word TECHNOPRENUERSHIP it was a kind of riddle in my mind on what is this, what are the things we will do in this subject, or does this subject really matters, it sounds like ENTREPRENEUR what is their defferences. So I do my little google or surfing in the internet thing, and in what I understand ENTREPRENUER talks of pure business. Like organizing business, manage it, make the business grow and etc. while TECHNOPRENUER is about business using technology as a model product or the main product.
“Technopreneurship is either involved in delivering an innovative hi-tech product (e.g. Intel) or makes use of hi-tech in an innovative way to deliver its product to the consumer (e.g. eBay), or both (e.g. most pharmaceutical companies). “

http://technopreneurship.wordpress.com/2006/11/29/defining-technopreneurship/

Actually being ask by this question is kind a hard to answer, u know y? Honestly I can’t see myself as a Technoprenuer as of now, because I know in myself that I must develop my skills and learn more lessons I mean TONS of lessons to become a technoprenuer. But lately when I enrolled in this subject IT Elective – Technoprenuership, and starting attending (as required. jejeje ). Some how it gives me answers to my questions in my head. When our facilitator had his first lesson to us to me that was a door opener to a new mind set and somehow I’m inspired and and interested to be a technoprenuer. Knowing the different traits that a technoprenuer have makes me think that I may have some traits but how about the other traits? So as of now I’m in the process of gaining those other traits that I don’t have. As of the generation now, technology helps both the youth and adult make their life much easier and both the young and adult wants to know the latest trend in gadgets, machine, or in computer. And technology has a great impact in human lives or in economic side. Nowadays every business in the world uses different kind of technology to make their business more progressive. Some uses technology in their business for managing even though the owner is far from his company or even watch every employee’s moves inside the company’s building, truly technology helps so many aspects in our life. As we all see and observe technology often found in rural areas technology associate within a city. To be an employer is great because no one manage you or dictates the things that you want to do for your business and you can earn double or triple than you expect depending on the goals that you want to achieve in your business rather than being an employee in a company who’s salary is fixed and pressure is almost all the time.Being a technoprenuer is a hard thing to do I think but with the right lessons coming from the academe and application in every knowledge we gain, and experience a person could become an employer and manage his/ her own business. Going back to the question “how do you see yourself as a technoprenuer?” as off now I see myself as a fruit that is not yet ripe. Just like fruit you can a unripe fruit but it will not taste good as what you expected in a ripe ones, I can’t do big things yet now as a technoprenuer but as I learn things in school and achieve the traits of a technoprenuer in the future I may shock my friends and the people you knows me of the achievements that I attain because of the process I’ve taken. But as of now, I’m a student and all I can do is to study hard, school side and I’ll try my best to be updated to the latest trend of technology here in our country in our country or in international. And also exercising the things that I learn and may learn in school and developing the skills that I have and may have in the future as I study the course that I took up. As what our facilitator said that being a technoprenuer doesn’t mean you must have high intelligence or greater than a normal person’s intelligence. As a technoprenuer I must have an idea for a business, or a business plan that never been implemented or invented and develop it with the best resources. And I believe that IT Hub give us a stepping stone in creating the idea that we have and process it by step. For me I must do my best to search and check that the thing that I made will be the only one in the local or in the national and nurture it and mold it in the best that I can. And if the business that I have will boom I must have the innovative mind like STEVE JOBS have and hunger for new development and open the ideas. Hard working, to be the best that I can, and to do the thing I like. And be competitive like Bill Gates that is not afraid in the nature of business. And I must have the passion in all the things that I do, and be optimistic to the all possibilities that will come up and to calculatedly risk sometime. Love the thing that I do and respect all the people who help and will help me in this career of being a technoprenuer. When I was in high school we did some business thing like selling some junk foods, candy, and etc. But that was a small business. From the old me who afraid in big things or big business to a technoprenuer that will bring innovations and development in the near future. I myself feel the changes in my prospective and understand of the power of information as what Steve Jobs said in the movie “INFORMATION IS POWER” whose achievements are known and an inspiration to a lot of people world wide.

3. Would you take the same career path that Steve Jobs took? Why or why not?As I saw the “Pirates of the Silicon Valley” and how Steve Jobs build his company and made his way to success. At first I can’t imagine that he was just an ordinary college student with his buddy Steve Wozniak trying to build a small computer and Jobs became fascinated with the marketing potential of such a computer. And for that they build their own company called “Apple Computers Company”. Considering he did not graduate in college and have no background or lessons about being an entrepreneur he manage to create a company in his time and to continue to grow it in such a way that they created a great impact in the business, economy and to the world of high technology. As far as I could remember they made their first gadget called the “Blue Box” when they discovered that a single whistle from a thing that was free in a cereal can active or access calls in any country in the world without paying additional payment. Because of the goal of Steve Jobs to wipe out IBM where IBM in that time was like Roman Empire or Greece that are too big to compete in business, he struggles to the different challenges in his career and overcome it.

For me seeing his career in the movie “Pirates of the Silicon Valley” I think it is like seeing the first TECHNOPRENUER in action I mean it gives some pointers and some characteristics a technoprenuer must have. Thinking that Steve Jobs building his career, it came to my mind that he also wanted to have more income or money, and for my self I want that also. If God let me to have a business and if my business reaches the progressive state I will not rush to have more success like what Steve Jobs did. I prefer my business progress slowly but surely, and I will continue accepting new opportunities for the business. But I believe that being in the business world, if a businessman would not have a goal for its business better to sale his / her business to other. So my goal for my business is be one of the best companies where my business focuses with. I will not do what Steve Jobs did to his employees and to his responsibilities and duties in his personal life. I do not want that my personal life and business side will not have balance.Going back to the last question of assignment in this subject, “would you take the same career path that Steve Jobs took? Why or why not?” As I base the outcome of the movie in what had happened in Steve Jobs it is very clear or shall we say obvious that I will say “No, I will not follow the career path of Mr. Steve Jobs. Because I don’t want my career to suffer likes what Steve Jobs career’s outcome. I want my career would be great in way that is different to Mr. Steve Jobs. If I my career will not be great as what Steve Jobs achievements will still keep on working hard, think deeply and use the different resources that are available. To be honest when I was a child I hate business man because all they care is the money and I think it changes when the time goes by and my brain gets matured a little bit (je je je). Some of us know about Steve Jobs and his type of guy shows that an idea can be great if you will start work and create. And he is an example that even a person didn’t graduate college or didn’t have a degree can be rich, inspire others, and have a mark in the history of mankind. He is truly a technoprenuer, I saw in some sites in the internet telling that he was the father of technoprenuerhip and I believe in that, sort of. I did say No in the third question of this assignment but I will follow the positive characteristics and develop for my self the skills that Steve Jobs have. I’m inspired of what Steve Jobs positive characteristics and Technopreneurial skills. But first I must study hard and giving the best that I could in different subjects so that I will graduate in this course and have degree. Because being technoprenuer starts in the academe, because the academe develop the intellectual skills, and character. I must look in the environment and think the things that are needed the development or betterment of the lives of people.
